What it does
The sensor uses ultrasonic waves to determine how full a bin is and transmits this information to the server. This information is then visualised and made available to end users.
How we built it
The sensor system is build using a raspberry pi and a ultrasonic module and runs some python code to calculate and transmit information regarding bin fullness to the server. The server is hosted on a scalable cloud platform called heroku with a node.js backend. Our web application is made with react, while the android application is written in java.
Challenges we ran into
We don't have much experience with hardware so we had some issues getting the sensor going.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're happy that we were able to make a working prototype in such a short period of time.
What we learned
We learned how to work together as a team, despite our different backgrounds and skills. As a result we were able to learn new things from one another.
What's next for intelliBins
We would like to make the hardware, cheaper, more compact and more energy efficient. The technology is out there, but we were unable to get our hands on it during the event.
