We wanted to allow donors and prospective donors to have insights on where donations are coming from, to provide a sense of incentive, recognition, and pride for supporting the Habitat for Humanity cause. At the same time, we wanted to provide insights to Habitat for Humanity to better target donation requests in the greater Champaign County area.

What it does

The Humanity Heatmap presents donation data as a heatmap to Habitat for Humanity volunteers, donors, and prospective donors in the community.

How we built it

Using the provided Habitat for Humanity dataset, we processed the donation data to geocode each donation address to a map coordinate with a latitude and longitude. We then used the Google Maps API to plot the coordinates as a heatmap in the greater Champaign County area.

Challenges we ran into

Handling N/A values in the dataset, and reformatting poorly formatted addresses to obtain valid coordinates.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Cleaning and manipulating the dataset to obtain plottable data for the heatmap.

What we learned

We learned how to interact with the Google Maps API and perform data cleaning on thousands of data points efficiently.

What's next for Humanity Heatmap

Generated insights on areas to target based on low heat areas.
