Inspiration Hell Gate began as an experiment to determine how far one creator can push Eastern fantasy action using only AI technologies. The project explores whether large-scale supernatural events—portals, yokai, spiritual combat—can be convincingly realized within the familiar backdrop of modern Seoul, entirely through AI-driven production. What I Built This project is a fully AI-generated Eastern fantasy action short, created from planning to final visual output by a single creator. Every scene—dense subway crowds, urban traffic chaos, the sky cracking open, yokai pouring into the city, and the battles of Moran and the Grandmother—was built using a combined workflow of AI models, primarily Midjourney and Runway. Key construction elements include: Realistic depiction of everyday Seoul Crowded subway, tight traffic, commuters’ expressions, and the city’s heat and noise built entirely through prompt-based generation. Full Eastern fantasy action design The red portal, demonic creatures, spiritual seals, fire bursts, energy clashes, and Korean myth-inspired heroes. AI-driven scale expansion A pipeline where a single creator can control large-scale environment transitions, character consistency, lighting, and tone through systematic AI prompting. What I Learned Combining Eastern fantasy elements with a realistic modern city requires strict control over lighting, tone, and particle consistency across models. Story-driven prompting is essential; embedding narrative context directly into prompts greatly improves visual coherence. The rapid iteration of AI proved that large-scale scenes—previously requiring full crews—can be prototyped and executed by one person with sufficient prompt design and testing. Challenges Maintaining consistent characters (Minjun, Moran, the Grandmother, the Yokai King) across multiple scenes required stable reference styles and carefully structured prompts. Blending fantasy action with real locations demanded continuous tuning to avoid visual dissonance between AI models. Eastern fantasy aesthetics—spiritual energy, mythological forms, traditional motifs—often needed delicate balancing to prevent exaggeration or distortion by the model. Conclusion Hell Gate is not merely an AI short film, but a demonstration of what is possible when Eastern fantasy action is attempted through 1-person AI production. This work reveals the expanding potential of AI as a tool capable of supporting worldbuilding, large-scale action, and stylized mythology—paving the way for future installments and more ambitious AI-driven storytelling.
