Inspiration

Our team is composed of four female engineers, and we acknowledge the lack of gender diversity across tech industries and the need for proactive solutions geared towards encouraging stronger female gender representation. Not only do we notice these issues in our daily lives, but we also see all these statistics that speak to the issues women in tech face such as the gender pay gap and the leadership position gap. With consideration of the digital divide limiting education to many youth around the world, we wanted to create an application that would provide resources and aid accessibility. Hoping to contribute to tackling the issue, we have created ventr, a technological solution that safeguards the FinTech industry and encourages female-identifying entrepreneurs to efficiently manage their businesses regardless of their background.

What it does

ventr, a cloud-based dashboard application tailored for female entrepreneurs in FinTech, adopts a centralized dashboard that combines features from invoices to networking and role model advice.

Under Company Suite, board members can customize the page, sharing it with their team for easy information access and task tracking. It’s seamlessly integrated with platforms such as Slack for a streamlined workflow. The Data Storage page is a cloud document management system that enables remote access and easy file transfer. Unlimited storage space and multiple-factor authentication for sensitive corporation data are available.

The finance section takes care of a business’s financial health and ensures a successful business trajectory for its clients. ventr offers an intuitive accounting system with full account payable and receivable functions. Invoices couldn’t be easier, and Ventr automatically records transactions along with payment reminders, fixed asset management, and cash-to-accrual features. Next is the Payroll page, which simplifies employee management and houses a history, gross pay calculator and deductions & contributions calculator.

Furthermore, ventr features a networking hub through which users can connect with other companies and individual entrepreneurs on the platform. In this supportive, inclusive environment, like-minded female executives can promote gender diversity within FinTech by sharing resources and advice. This feature will help combat the lack of female role model representation across tech.

How we built it

With a strong background in UI/UX design, our team worked together to create both a low-fidelity and high-fidelity mockup of the application using Figma. While finalizing our typography, branding, and graphic design choices, we considered the user experience and ease of access for all ages and educational backgrounds. The website demo was mainly created using css and scss.

Challenges we ran into

The most static few hours were in the brainstorming phase when the hackathon kicked off - we tossed away ideas like used wet wipes during covid. We also had time zone differences among members of the team, to which we had to adapt. At the end, the panic set in when we faced technical issues while trying to push to Github and set up hosting, but it all worked out.

What we learned

Through this project, we were able to gain deeper insights into the struggles women face in tech, as well as the actionable solutions we as female engineers can devise. We did extensive research on certain developing countries like South Africa and India to learn about the digital divide and surveyed close female friends about our idea. We also learned about the extensive technical information regarding cloud-based solutions, digital accounting, and more. On top of that, we were able to connect with new friends through the hackathon and bond with our team members through a similar passion and drive to create.

What's next for ventr

For ventr, the sky’s the limit. Being an open, collaborative platform, ventr can specialize or broaden as desired to suit the ever-changing tech market. Our team would like to make it a more comprehensive single-page application, with full functionality and complete UI control.
