Inspiration
Our group was sitting around a table, trying to come up with ideas for our project, and we realized that it would be fun to make a racing game. However, we wanted to make it unique in some way, and so we decided to take a spin on the kart-racing genre by adding modern guns.
What it does
It's a racing game, but the cars have big floating guns above them. You can play it with up to 20 friends in theory, although it might get a little cramped.
How we built it
We used Unity, Fusion, and Blender. Blender allowed us to create models for our project. Unity was the game engine we chose to use. Fusion is a Unity-specific tool that gave us many options on how to network our project. It made online multiplayer much much easier.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of issues making online multiplayer work. Even at the end of our project. Players will sometimes randomly disappear or fall off of the level. We spent hours trying to debug strange issues with no signs of progress. We also faced many bugs in general that were unrelated to multiplayer.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting multiplayer to at least somewhat work. When we ran the code for the first time, and we were all able to drive around simultaneously, we were full of energy. Also, we all learned how to use completely new tools, and we were successful with them. Lastly, we made a completely original song for our game.
What we learned
Yinka learned how to use Blender. Noah learned how to use Unity. Finn and Gavin learned how to use the Fusion library.
What's next for gun car
We plan to keep developing it so it's in a (somewhat) usable shape. Enough that players don't randomly disappear and can move in a straight line successfully.
