Inspiration

As someone who has recently made the transition into sustainable fashion, I realized how difficult it is to shop for products that fit your personal style but are also created by brands that place a high emphasis on environmentally sustainability. We created greenshop as a way to fix this problem.

What it does

greenshop is a Chrome extension that tracks the fashion website the user is currently browsing and shows them how sustainable that brand is. Our extension also provides suggestions for alternative brands based on how expensive they are and their sustainability rating.

How we built it

We built our extension using ReactJS. We used Google Firebase to store the brand-related information necessary for the extension.

Challenges we ran into

We had to make up for the fact that we are only a group of two. Neither of us was very familiar with Firebase or making a Chrome extension. Specifically, we had trouble reading data from the database and parsing through data without access to an API.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Completing a project which required technologies we were completely unfamiliar with.

What we learned

We learned how to use Firebase and React, and sharpened our JavaScript, HTML, and CSS skills. We also experimented with other tools, like the Google Cloud Vision API and Tangram.dev, even though we did not end up using these in the end.

What's next for greenshop

We would like to incorporate ML into our recommendation algorithm, and also potentially recommend specific products via some sort of reverse image search.
