Inspiration:
I’ve always been drawn to stories about the unseen, the forgotten, and the space between the living and the dead. While experimenting with AI filmmaking and researching Bermuda Triangle folklore, I became fascinated by the tension between beauty and dread.
Ghost Island began with a simple question: What happens when a crash survivor steps into a place with a truth she was never meant to discover? This idea grew into a short, atmospheric micro-horror about exploration, fear, and the moment reality shifts in an unexpected way.
What I learned:
Working on Ghost Island taught me how powerful AI tools can be when used thoughtfully and intentionally. I learned: How to worldbuild quickly and visually through Midjourney How to craft movement and atmosphere with Luma, Kling, and Runway How sound design shapes emotion using Udio and ElevenLabs How to maintain visual continuity across multiple AI tools through careful prompt control Most importantly, I learned how much can be communicated in under three minutes when the storytelling is focused and minimal.
How it was built:
Ghost Island was created through a hybrid AI filmmaking pipeline: Worldbuilding with Midjourney to craft the island’s tropical yet eerie atmosphere. Character design & continuity, developing a year-2100 burgundy pilot uniform and relying on back shots and OTS shots for consistency. Motion sequences generated using Kling, Runway and Luma, animating still frames into immersive movement. Ghost creation, experimenting with white aura spirits, shadow ghosts, and supernatural environmental elements. Sound & music, featuring a ghost-choir theme from Udio, a single evolving horror cue for the ghost encounters, and ElevenLabs for vocal textures and the final scream. Editing, shaping everything into a cohesive arc of arrival: discovery, haunting & revelation.
Challenges ran into:
Maintaining continuity with AI-generated visuals, especially when costumes or lighting shifted unpredictably. Designing original ghosts that felt fresh and unsettling without falling into familiar horror tropes. Balancing tone, ensuring the film felt simultaneously beautiful, eerie, and frightening. Working within tool limitations, especially with dense foliage, reflections, fog, and water. Time constraints, requiring fast iteration and adaptability as the story evolved through the visuals.
Accomplishments that am proud of:
I’m proud that Ghost Island was created in a matter of hours yet still carries atmosphere, emotion, and a complete story arc. I trusted my instincts and allowed the film to evolve visually as the AI responded to my prompts, turning limitations into creative direction. How cinematic and cohesive the world feels, despite using multiple AI tools The original ghost designs, which feel haunting without relying on familiar tropes The twist moment at the water, achieved through subtle visual storytelling rather than exposition The mood and pacing: quiet, eerie, exactly as envisioned How quickly I was able to build a polished short from idea: images, motion, sound, final cut (all by one person) Above all, I’m proud that Ghost Island became something uniquely mine: a blend of my voice, my style, and my fascination with beauty and fear intertwined.
