Inspiration
This project was inspired by the lyrics of Ghost in the City by The Crystal Method. The themes of presence, haunting, and urban isolation immediately sparked the idea of a ghost following a woman through a futuristic city. That concept evolved into a visual narrative where the ghost takes the form of gargoyles watching her from rooftops, alleys, and neon-lit structures. Visually, the world draws inspiration from Blade Runner, cyberpunk art, and gothic urban mythology. The cold neon atmosphere, rain-soaked architecture, and stone guardians create a contrast between technology and the supernatural. Musically, the track is a Bit Torment reinterpretation of the original song, produced by Brett Fisher, featuring keyboards and production by John Bechdel, vocals by Aya Gruber, and guitar by Cesar Soto. The video also includes a cameo by Scott Kirkland from The Crystal Method. This was my first AI music video, and much of the inspiration came from curiosity, experimentation, and the desire to merge music production with AI-driven visual storytelling.
What it does
The video reimagines Ghost in the City as a cyberpunk ghost story. It follows a woman moving through a futuristic city while a ghostly presence, manifesting as gargoyles, observes her and subtly influences her environment. The video brings together: • AI-generated cyberpunk cityscapes • A haunting narrative built around gargoyle-shaped ghosts • Stylized neon lighting and atmospheric rain • A reimagined industrial-electronic version of the song • Cameos and performances from members of Ministry and The Crystal Method The result is a dark, atmospheric experience that blends music, storytelling, and AI-driven cinematic imagery.
How we built it
Music Production o Produced by Brett Fisher. o John Bechdel contributed keyboards and production elements. o Aya Gruber recorded vocals. o Cesar Soto performed guitar. o Final mix crafted to fit visual transitions and narrative mood.
AI Video Creation o Generated scenes using several advanced AI video models to explore cyberpunk visuals. o Tested multiple tools to find the right blend of neon lighting, rain, shadows, and city density. o Developed and refined gargoyle-based ghost imagery through iterative prompt engineering.
Narrative Development o Built a story where the ghost observes and subtly interacts with the woman throughout the city. o Created transitions showing the ghost shifting between gargoyle statues and spectral forms.
- Editing and Post-Production o Synced visuals tightly with the music's emotional and rhythmic peaks. o Color corrected and enhanced cyberpunk lighting. o Sequenced scenes for clarity and storytelling impact. ________________________________________ ## Challenges we ran into
• First-time AI workflow This was our first AI music video, and learning multiple tools at once was demanding. Each model had different strengths and limitations that required trial and error.
• Cyberpunk lighting and visual consistency Achieving stable neon lighting, reflective surfaces, and rain effects required significant adjustments.
• Gargoyle ghost design Making the gargoyles appear supernatural but still stone-like was difficult. AI models often distorted faces or textures, requiring many iterations.
• Character continuity Maintaining the woman's appearance across shots was challenging.
• Integrating music and visuals Matching the emotional beats and pacing of the track with AI footage took careful editing.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
• Completing a polished AI music video while learning new tools and workflows. • Met with Scott Kirkland on the final audio mix and took live shots of him performing in LA that we then animated in AI for his cameo. • John Bechdel and Cesar Sota are members of the Grammy nominated Industrial band, Ministry, and recorded and appear on both the audio and AI video. • Creating a compelling reinterpretation of Ghost in the City with a unique narrative and visual identity. • Establishing the first piece of the Bit Torment visual aesthetic. This is Part 1 of a 3 Part AI Music Video compilation to support Bit Torment's upcoming album release.
What we learned
• How to combine multiple AI tools to achieve a unified art style. • How to refine AI prompts to improve character consistency and environmental stability. • The importance of manual editing to enhance AI-generated footage. • How to merge narrative ideas with AI visuals to elevate emotional impact. • That AI video creation is both highly technical and highly artistic.
What is next for Ghost in the City
• Official release of the track and video on all streaming platforms as part of Bit Torment's upcoming album. • Creation of “The Horror” for Bit Torment’s new song which will be the 3rd installment in our 3 part AI Music Video series to support our upcoming album. • Continued development of cyberpunk and futuristic visuals for additional Bit Torment singles. • Improved character animation workflows and expanded use of AI-driven motion. • Integration into live visual performances and future narrative projects.
