Inspiration

We got the idea for our game from other clicker games such as Cookie Clicker and Tap Titans. Simplistic yet addicting and fun games. We thought we could get the game design and incorporate our theme of Environmental crises and teach others about them while playing a fun and simple game.

What it does

At it's core it's a simplistic clicker game where you click/clean the trash of varying sizes from the ocean. While doing so we give the players little tidbits of information here and there about how the trash gets into our oceans and what we can do to stop it.

How we built it

We built the game in the Unity Engine from scratch. With fully hand drawn artwork drawn in Aseprite and imported into Unity.

Challenges we ran into

Only one of our team members had very minor experience in Unity with the rest having none at all. Through the 36 hours we learnt Unity from nothing making silly mistakes like trying to use 3d objects for the trash in our 2d game. Incorporating GitHub into Unity had it's own fair share of quirks as well. Animations would just not work when pulled from the repository and sometimes files would not be pushed causing us to wonder what we had done wrong.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

There were many difficulties while working on the project, but each time, we worked together to overcome it. Our main achievement was figuring out how to create 2d objects with physics as if floating in the ocean, and having them randomly spawn with one of our many assets. We're proud of the game we made and we're happy to make a game that helps nature even a little bit. Above all, we can't forget the memory of completing the game at the end.

What we learned

We learned that if we combine our knowledge together, we can somehow make something meaningful. we couldn't have done it alone. We all realize the importance of team-up the most while working on the project all night together.

What's next for GamerJam - Ocean Free

There are plenty still to be done to Ocean Free. We first envisioned a shop system where you can buy things from the money you collect from trash to further help in trash collecting. Eventually leading you to gaining enough money to completely clean all the trash from the ocean. The game is far from done and there is still more content and polishing to be done. Maybe in the future we can expand from oceans to other Environmental Crises such as deforestation, air pollution, loss of biodiversity and many more problems that are still around the globe. But for now, we are extremely happy and proud of the game we were able to make in the time we were given and couldn't have hoped for anything better.
