2020 was a big year for dogs, who were a source of comfort for all during the pandemic. With the influx of new pups joining families, we wanted to create an app to help new and established owners monitor their pets' activities to form healthy habits and a positive owner-pet relationship. The inspiration for this project came from the team members' shared love of pets and the want to build a mobile application which we could all see ourselves using.
What it does
The app communicates with an AWS server as well as google Firebase in order to store events such as vet checkups, trainings, daily exercise, baths and more so that taking care of your puppy is a breeze.
How we built it
We build Follow Fido using a React Native Frontend in order to run the application across iOS and Android and the server side was written in python in the flask library. We utilized Google Firebase in order to store our information and and AWS EC2 server to do our server side processing.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenges we ran into related to getting used to rapid collaboration on a git repository although near the end we were pulling, pushing, and merging flawlessly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are all very proud of our teamwork and ability to produce this app working together over the course of a 24 hour period.
What we learned
We learned that a lot of planning goes into building complex applications and that teamwork really does make the dream work. There were a lot of moving parts in this project, and every time a team member ran into an issue, another would jump in to help as much as possible. We also learned that we were capable of creating a functioning app complete with branding within a 24-hour period.
What's next for Follow Fido
The app has a list of implementations we are planning for the future. We want to add features such as an emergency health card with emergency contacts that can be quickly sent with short notice to pet health providers as well as a forum for pet owners to discuss all areas of dog ownership. We also want to create an analytics page to show the frequency of events (such as walking, bathing, etc.) with the option to create goals for each event. Finally, we want to include product suggestions to ease issues pet owners frequently run into, such as dental issue prevention.
