Fading Petals — Project Story
Inspiration
“Fading Petals” was inspired by the sudden loss of young life — and the question of how fleeting beauty can leave a lasting mark.
Drawing from Surrealism and Salvador Dalí-inspired visual absurdity, the film became a poetic meditation on the boundaries of memory, consciousness, and disappearance.
What It Does
“Fading Petals” is an AI-assisted surreal visual poem, presented in the form of a music video.
- It evokes the space between dream and reality — a place where identity dissolves and symbols speak.
- It brings together floating petals, empty lakes, creatures with human and animal forms, and watchful eyes hidden in flowers.
- Through lyrical abstraction, it reveals what is fragile, indescribable, yet deeply lingering.
Role & Motivation
As a sound designer in traditional workflows, I’m usually involved only at the final stage of production. AI changed that.
With emerging tools, I was able to shape both sound and visuals — exploring the full creative process from start to finish.
“Fading Petals” became a test of whether a single creator could craft a cohesive emotional experience by unifying music, imagery, and symbolic expression into a single poetic piece.
This journey revealed the creative potential of AI—showing how these tools can open new spaces for expression, allowing creators to shape meaning more freely and fully.
How We Built It
Music & Editing
- The soundtrack was generated using Suno AI with lyrical assistance by GPT, then edited and mixed in Cubase.
- The full film was edited in CapCut, where sound and visuals were woven together into a cohesive emotional experience.
Visuals
Using a combination of AI visual tools such as Midjourney, 即梦 / Jimeng, Wan 2.5, and Luma AI, I generated surreal images and animations including:
- Twilight lakes reflecting the sky
- Fish-headed figures observing their own reflections
- Flowers that blink their eyes
- Suit-wearing ant-people
- Trees with mouths that open as if to speak
These images are symbols of observation, cycles of life, and nature’s hidden consciousness.
In this dreamlike environment, identity dissolves and nature becomes a witness — reminding us that even in fleeting moments, something watches, something stays.
Challenges We Ran Into
- Balancing poetic ambiguity with emotional resonance
- Maintaining aesthetic cohesion between multiple AI-generated media
- Avoiding AI automation overshadowing emotional depth
- Navigating prompt limitations while retaining creative intent
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- This was the creator’s first attempt at non-realist visual storytelling using AI.
- Successfully blended audio and video outputs from multiple independent AI systems.
- Retained artistic integrity throughout an unpredictable AI-assisted workflow.
- Created a work that reveals new meaning each time it's rewatched — a testament to the dreamlike power of surrealism.
What We Learned
- How to work collaboratively with AI while still protecting human insight and emotional depth.
- The value of repetition and refinement in crafting consistency across different media and tools.
- That surreal works thrive on ambiguity — letting the audience make their own meaning.
- The creative process became a dialogue: not only between human and machine, but between the artist and the work itself.
