Background
Research made it clear that without a high quality early education, at risk children are 25% more likely to drop out of school, 40% more likely to become a teen parent, 50% more likely to be placed in special education, 60% more likely to never attend college and 70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. Providing access and quality are the two important aspects in education administration. The deteriorating conditions of primary and elementary education systems in the rural area of our country is a proven fact in the school system.
I grew up in a rural area where access to quality education was denied us. I had to trek for a long distance from my village to the nearest city on daily basis in order to get quality education. In government run schools in the rural areas, a child who finished grade 5 doesn’t have the basic foundation to enter secondary school. According to statistics, 55% of all the children who join primary school drop out by grade 5.
Our Activities In 2020, after series of experiences working on societal development issues in my village Enugwu Agidi, I alongside my team felt that the socio-economic conditions of Enugwu Agidi was the result of poor educational system and lack of educational facilities. In order to tackle this menace of poverty, hunger and unemployment lingering in Enugwu Agidi, we set up a weekend educational model that serve about 40 to 50 children between the ages of 4 and 10. We engage the children in several activities according to their learning abilities. Our focus was mostly on Literacy and Numeracy with a touch of creative art i.e. bead making skills. So far we have been able to make a direct impact on so many children. About 50 % of them has successfully moved to Secondary school.
Proposed Solution Since the pandemic, 80% of children has access to their parents smartphones while some has their own smart device. Edtech companies like Ulesson and Chatbot have been of great help since 2021. We will personally install these Edtech Apps in the students and parents smartphones across these villages and educate them on how to use these technologies. Our intention is to personalize education and increase students engagement on these solutions by providing ways for parents and teachers to nudge students on their lessons. In this way, we will be able to reach a greater number of students, make more impact and make learning easier and more engaging. To those that will be able to make it to our education model, we will provide personal learning devices and create device library in our school. Currently, Edtech for Primary and Secondary School represent about half of the overall market now. School closure prompted by the pandemic have provided a strong boost to these numbers. While and internet reach continue to grow across the country, education technology market expands.
