Inspiration
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many schools have transitioned to online learning. As such, students are required to submit more online, typed assignments compared to before. However, studies have shown that writing notes out by hand is more effective for learning compared to typing. As students ourselves, we've often wished for an easy way to take pictures of handwritten notes and convert them to text. Envision is the perfect tool for this.
What it does
Envision is a simple and easy to use website that takes in images of notes and converts them into text.
How we built it
We used Python, Flask, HTML, & CSS. We also used a Google Cloud API.
Challenges we ran into
We uploaded our JSON credentials onto GitHub and our Google Cloud project was suspended for cryptomining! (We suspect someone stole our credentials.) This was also the first hackathon for most of us, so everything was a learning experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a functioning prototype in such a short amount of time.
What we learned
We learned the basics of Flask. We also learned common gitignore practices. Throughout the weekend, we attended several AI and Quantum Computing workshops where we learned a lot.
What's next for Envision
In the future, we hope to put our site on a platform like Heroku. We also want to give users the option to download a Word Document with the text. In addition, we hope to develop this project further so it can be applied to other fields, such as the medical field.
