What inspired us?

As customers of e-commerce ourselves, we noticed that a number of our packages were delivered with excessive amounts of packaging. Upon doing some research, we found that the increase in online shopping had indeed led to a significant increase in packaging waste, especially during this pandemic.

How did we build our project and what have we learned?

Our project involves implementing technical solutions with ML for sustainable practices. We decided to use object detection to identify and sort products by size so that more appropriate amounts of packaging can be used. This would reduce packaging waste, require less material to produce packaging, and decrease the overall carbon footprint of this process.

Challenges

Some of our key challenges include model debugging issues and a long processing time, especially when it came to training the algorithm.
