Inspiration
The core idea of this game comes from Taiwan’s retro slot machine arcade culture, where players pull the lever in hopes of hitting a lucky combination. I wanted to blend this nostalgic mechanic with modern genres such as idle RPGs and roguelikes, creating a system where randomness, strategy, and progression intertwine. The goal was to capture the thrill of “one pull can change everything,” while embedding it within an RPG adventure framework.
What it does
Dungeon Slot RPG combines slot-machine-style randomness with RPG combat and roguelike progression. Players defeat monsters to earn coins, then use those coins to pull the slot machine, which can lead to:
- Treasure chests
- Extra coins
- Shops
- Events
- Skills
- And other surprises
Each pull influences the player's path through increasingly challenging areas filled with powerful enemies. The core gameplay loop revolves around strategic slot usage, risk-taking, and adapting to random outcomes.
How we built it
This project was created using a workflow similar to Vibe Coding, where I describe the idea, style, and features, and rely on AI tools to generate most of the actual game content. The development cycle involved:
- Defining concepts and mechanics through natural language instructions
- Iterating on AI-generated code, art, and systems
- Continuously testing and refining gameplay
- Adjusting prompts and logic to better communicate the intended results to the AI
Although the game heavily relies on AI-assisted creation, the vision, design direction, and gameplay structure were manually guided.
Challenges we ran into
AI tools still struggle to fully understand nuanced intentions, especially for game feel, pacing, and system logic. Much of the process involved:
- Iterative trial-and-error
- Correcting misunderstood mechanics
- Reworking systems that didn’t behave as expected
- Balancing randomness against player agency
Translating the exact concept in my mind into a functioning game required patience and repeated refinement.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest success is seeing the ideas in my head accurately realized inside the game. Despite the trial-and-error nature of AI-assisted development, the game achieved:
- A functioning slot-based RPG system
- Early-stage roguelike progression
- A unique blend of retro Taiwanese arcade aesthetics with modern gameplay
- A creative demonstration of how AI tools can support game development
Reaching a playable concept that reflects the original vision is the most rewarding part.
What's next
The current version is only the beginning. Future updates will include:
- More regions
- Additional monsters
- New events and slot outcomes
- Enhanced slot machine mechanics
- Greater randomness and “high-risk, high-reward” moments
- Expanded content and deeper player progression
The goal is to further emphasize the slot machine as the core of the game’s identity and deliver an experience where every pull feels exciting and meaningful.
