INSPIRATION

When considering the issue at hand, we drew deep concern from the fact that not many youths from the age group of 16 to 20 are enrolled in extracurricular internships. This trend exists despite the many complaints of youths not knowing which industry of work or tertiary education they would want to engage in.

While designing the mobile app, we have drawn inspiration from the aesthetics of Pinterest on the landing and home page. At the same time, we took heed from the resume structure provided on LinkedIn.

WHAT IT DOES

Mobile app that does login and registration for both corporation and student. A simplified user interface, heavily inspired by the scrollable / carousel nature of many social media platforms today to appeal to the youth and make job searching less intimidating. The simple UI serves to break the barrier of students needing to understand too much industry jargon and instead to follow their interest. With a simple click, students can sign up and indicate interest to the companies and thus start their journey of finding a job that suits their passion!

HOW IT IS BUILT

Flutter and Dart with Android studio.
Wireframing of the design with Figma Version control with Git and Github

CHALLENGES FACED

Project management - time was not utilised efficiency, leading to slow progress and errors not surfaced before later on in the project Project scalability for a hackathon - we underestimated the amount of time to complete this project Limited experience in the front-end, leading to us avoiding the more direct approach of coding a web app. Using the dart language and flutter framework is a huge challenge for most of our members given that it’s their first time. Lack of preparation before the hackathon in understanding the expertise of our team members, leading to lack of clarity of our roles during the hackathon.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Created the skeleton of the project, incorporating a functional simple-UI onto a mobile app that is scalable with more time using the flutter framework and firebase.

WHAT WE LEARNED

How to develop and deploy a responsive mobile app in a short timeframe. We also managed to learn dart and flutter in a day. Collaboration and communication is critical.

NEXT STEPS

Firstly, We will provide more features to help students from other industries who want to switch from their current line of studies. Secondly, we can scale the project with a larger database through scraping the web for job offerings meant for this age group instead of physically gathering the employers. Thirdly, we can introduce a feature to migrate the present data to LinkedIn to ease their transition onto a professional platform for all age groups.

This way, our mobile app will be the node for youths trying to find internships.
