Dandelions are amazing. The amount of potential in just a single seed. It could go anywhere, land anywhere, and it will multiply into many others just like it. The trouble is, they sometimes land in unsuitable places. A car windscreen. Someone’s jacket. And so it is with kind words. They have limitless potential, but often those who need to hear it most, do not get to. COVID has made everyone more isolated, so we wanted to make something that helps people connect and exchange kind words!
What it does
'Dandylion' is an aesthetic social writing platform designed to maximize the potential of kind words. Our website is meant to be a sort of haven from a problematic life, where users can stop and just watch the gentle dandelions fall while exchanging kind words with our positive community, with calming lofi music accompaniment. Users can send and receive anonymous letters from a positive community.
How we built it
We used React and Auth0 for the front end and user management, and a SQLite3 database (python backend) to store the letters.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble connecting the front end and backend, but we managed to solve the issues. We had trouble deploying our site via Heroku.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to get the Send and Receive features to be fully functional. We are also very proud of the UI we created. A major selling point of our website is that it is aesthetically pleasing and relaxing. We want people to enjoy the process of helping others and making new friends.
What we learned
We learned a lot about making websites looks pretty, animations, and about databases.
What's next for Dandylion
We're trying to make the Downstream function work, which are chats that match users with similar experiences and facing similar problems together, so they can share coping mechanisms and advice.
