Inspiration
Lockdown inspired us. We have been searching for a means to get back to normal life as soon as possible and curb the spread of COVID 19. We believe that, if used properly, our application could help in this mobile cause.
What it does
You provide the app with an address and some distance/covid preferences and the application intelligently finds the lowest risk, closest grocery stores using the most up-to-date municipally-sourced data to minimize your risk of exposure when you shop for groceries.
How we built it
We used Django, HTML, CSS, pure javascript, and primarily the Google Maps API. We also web scraped up-to-date (and updating) data for our source.
Challenges we ran into
Limitations of Google's Maps API, sleep deprivation, web scraping the data despite having no prior experience
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The animations, the speed of the algorithm, the quality of searches.
What we learned
Webscraping skills, time management, group coordination, frontend design, etc!
What's next for Covid Shopper
Implementing heatmaps(we already have the code, would just need to marry it with the map pins) to visibly display covid rates to the user, also allowing the store searches to be completely live as opposed to hard coded
