The entire team felt that the pandemic had impacted their mental health, and that in general, feelings of loneliness and isolation during the pandemic are very common. Anxiety and mental illnesses perpetuated by COVID are felt worldwide, and free support systems are very scarce.
2 of 3 teammates are from Morocco and found that in a study by the head of child psychiatry, suicide attempts and cases of violence tripled during the pandemic. Furthermore, suicide attempts among children age 6 to 12 years old doubled and cases of domestic violence were reported to have increased.
Did you ever wish you could reach out to someone with the same problems as you? Or that you could talk to a professional therapist for free without future commitments or the fear of being judged?
We wanted to answer the question- How can we safely seek comfort from others who are in similar situations? Furthermore, how can we safely connect with others, highlighting our experiences rather than border or racial differences?
What it does
COVID care tech is our solution to mental health problems and feelings of isolation - our vision is to bring everyone together safely and support them. Points we wanted to highlight are anonymity and connection- we want people to be able to connect anonymously without avatars or names.
How we built it
After brainstorming, a preliminary prototype in Figma was created. With illustrations, font, and the design all done, we moved to android studio to create the app. The logo was drawn, after effects was used to edit, and Photoshop was used to create mock-ups.
Challenges we ran into
Google map API integration takes 24 hours, so we did not have time to integrate it and had to take a screenshot of the map instead.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is the first hackathon of one of our teammates, and we were happy to support her in the process, we all learned a lot and were a great team.
