Inspiration

We were inspired by the concept of Yin and Yang. Most students have subjects they excel in and others they do poorly in i.e. Math and English. Therefore our solution is based on the belief that the best study buddies are those who balance each other out academically. Additionally, our solution was inspired by our personal difficulties during online school, including a lack of proper help from teachers and lack of connection with other students.

What it does

CounterBalance is an educational website that allows students to find study partners with opposing subject strengths and weaknesses. For now students can find study partners for mandatory courses according to the Canadian secondary curriculum such a Maths, Sciences, and English.

How we built it

We started by brainstorming various ideas for each challenge. Once we agreed upon the idea of a solution involving oppositely strengthed study partners we expanded upon the problem and our solution’s benefits, functions and brand guidelines. The logo we designed relates to Yin and Yang in its shape and complementary colours. This relays to the user the harmonious strength. To create our design we used Figma and Open source illustrations. Our landing page is in the traditional colours of Yin and Yang: black, white & grey. However, once you sign or log in the site changes to our company’s colours. Finally, we used HTML, CSS, and Javascript to create the interface of our website.

Challenges we ran into

  • Finding time to work together
  • No teammate with back-end development skills
  • No teammate with strong front-end skills

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We finished building ⅘ of the most important pages and are also very proud of our design.

What we learned

We learned how to make a full website.

What's next for Counter Balance

  • Expand to include more educational systems
  • Build the back-end part of our website
