Inspiration
During the Covid-19 pandemic, there was an increased substance use and an elevated suicidal ideation among a myriad of young adults - racial/ethnic minorities, essential healthcare workers, and unpaid adult caregivers.
What it does
The Comet Health app will allow all UTD students to access their counselors' contact list on the spot, allow them to make an appointment with their desired counselors, and also use their State Farm coverage to find specialty doctors nearby (as referred by UTD counselors).
How we built it
We used Whimsical to first create the wireframes, React Native framework to work on both the back-end and the front-end, and all these information stored in the database using MongoDB.
Challenges we ran into
We did not have any communicative challenges amongst the team members but the technical challenges we ran into include: connecting to the router, interacting with the navigation, and connecting the back-end with MongoDB.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have a full version of the application that we initially had drafted. We are also proud that we are speaking on behalf of students who struggle reaching out to their counselors.
What we learned
We learned that building a same application in a different environment/network could lead to both project scope creep and project delay. The silver lining from this was that we learned to be responsive individuals.
What's next for Comet Health
It would be nice for Comet Health to eventually partner with State Farm to not only provide the list of covered referrals but also to build a psychology-focused health insurance service for students.
