Inspiration
In many countries, sorting waste is a common practice, yet not everyone follows it, often due to a lack of understanding of its importance. This is even more pronounced in countries where such practices are not endorsed at a governmental level. Recognizing this gap, we decided to create a game that highlights the significance of waste sorting. Our Mobile People team (all teammates are members of Mobile People community) decided to create a game that aims to educate players about how sorting waste not only conserves resources but also facilitates the production of new goods from recycled materials. By engaging with this interactive experience, we hope to inspire those who have never considered sorting their waste to start doing so, thereby making a small yet meaningful contribution to sustainability. Ultimately, this could lead to a significant impact, demonstrating how individual small actions can collectively make a difference in our world's health and longevity.
What it does
The Recyclo game features three engaging mini-games: Catcher, Clicker, and Finder, designed to impart valuable lessons on waste identification and sorting:
Catcher: In this mini-game, your objective is to sort an assortment of falling trash into the appropriate bins, testing your reflexes and waste categorization skills.
Clicker: This game challenges you to quickly identify and click on specific types of waste. It's a race against time to find the right waste type, enhancing your speed and accuracy in waste sorting.
Finder: Here, you're tasked with locating and collecting a specified type of waste hidden within thick grass. This mini-game emphasizes the importance of keen observation and persistence in environmental conservation efforts.
But the gameplay extends beyond just sorting waste.
Your Sorted Waste Turns into Resources: All the waste you successfully sort doesn't just disappear; it accumulates in your personal store. Here lies the creative core of our game.
Crafting Recycled Artifacts: Utilizing the sorted waste, you can craft various recycled artifacts. These can range from everyday items like a shampoo bottle to imaginative creations such as a car or even a house made entirely from recycled materials.
Artifact Wallet: Once an artifact is crafted, it's added to your mobile wallets. This feature allows you to access your crafted artifacts at any time, showcasing your achievements and the tangible results of your recycling efforts.
Through this structured gameplay, we aim to educate and inspire. By turning waste sorting and recycling into a fun and interactive experience, we hope to encourage players to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives, demonstrating how individual actions can lead to a significant positive impact on our environment.
How we built it
When developing our game, we used the Flutter framework, integrating the Flame package for its rich set of game development features. Additionally, we employed the Google Wallet API and Apple Wallet SDK to facilitate the integration of the Google Wallet and Apple Wallet allowing players to access their crafted artifacts anytime. For resource storage and hosting the web part, we used Firebase (and integration with Google Wallet API we did with Firebase Cloud Functions), leveraging its robust cloud solutions to ensure seamless gameplay and data management. This combination of technologies enabled us to make our game accessible and engaging for a wide audience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We take great pride in the potential of our game to make the world a better place, irrespective of whether we win or not. By integrating enjoyable gaming mechanics with a powerful message about recycling and sustainability, we aim to inspire a change in mindset towards waste management. This game represents more than just a technological achievement; it embodies our hope for a future where every individual contributes to the sustainability of our planet. The idea that our efforts could lead to positive environmental changes and foster a more conscientious approach to resource consumption fills us with pride.
What we learned
Beyond technical skills, the most enlightening aspect was deepening our understanding of waste recycling and its crucial role in goods production. This project not only broadened our technical expertise but also heightened our awareness of environmental sustainability, showcasing the profound impact of technology in promoting a greener planet.
What's next for Recyclo
Moving forward with Recyclo, our vision is to broaden the game's appeal and educational impact by introducing a larger variety of games and crafting artifacts. This expansion is not just about enhancing gameplay but also about enriching the platform with deeper educational content. We aim to engage players in the importance of recycling and sustainability through an interactive and enjoyable experience, fostering a greater understanding and commitment to environmental stewardship among our audience.
In addition to game development, we're exploring collaborations with companies that leverage recycled materials, aiming to connect virtual achievements with real-world impact. By negotiating discounts or rewards for players who earn artifacts in our game, we plan to create a tangible incentive for recycling efforts, bridging the gap between digital engagement and actual environmental action. This initiative represents a step towards integrating our game into a broader ecosystem of sustainability, where virtual recycling efforts have direct real-world benefits.
In the future, we envision Recyclo as an open platform for hosting sustainability games, allowing not only us but also other developers to add their games, users will be able to play these games and earn artifacts, while we, in turn, negotiate with potential partners to provide discounts and other kinds of collaborations
