Inspiration

When we read about the natural disaster that happened in East Timor, Indonesia, a few days ago, we immediately began brainstorming ideas that would help people, especially in poorer countries, survive. Just three years ago in Puerto Rico, Hurricane Maria took the lives of over 3,000 people. We wanted to raise awareness and create tips that would prevent more deaths from occurring.

What it does

This platform aims to inform people about the economic struggles brought by natural disasters such as hurricanes and provides the options to donate. Through our program, we hope to inform people about different ways to protect yourself during a disaster. We did this by incorporating an Echo AR model which demonstrates the layout of an underground shelter as well as what materials to bring. Our platform also provides real time weather updates which warn people if there are storms coming up.

How we built it

We used repl.it to code for the website, and used HTML5 and CSS for the frontend. We also used different sources such as government agencies to gather data for our paragraphs and images.

Challenges we ran into

As high school freshmen, we had no experience coding in html and css. However, with the help of mentors from this hackathon as well as workshops, we were able to develop a working website that helped people during natural disasters. We encountered many difficulties as this was our first time coding, we've also had a lot of scrapped ideas either because they weren't good enough or they were too difficult to execute.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We made a website from scratch using HTML and formatted it to make it look cleaner, and learned a lot about website making. We also incorporated a live weather element to show the weather in different locations.

What we learned

We learned more about creating and making websites from scratch as well as incorporating widgets into our site. We also learned about how important communication and cooperation is, especially in projects involving multiple people.

What's next for CatastroFunds

We can incorporate more features such as a live map using google maps and more information regarding natural disasters. We also plan to make it a real non-profit organization with enough time, care, and hard work.
