Inspiration

The inspiration behind this idea draws from our friendships and shared memories. When we host dorm parties, go on road trips, or sing late night karaoke, deciding who gets to choose what songs we play is a challenge. If Luke wants to listen to R&B and SZA, Alex listens to indie and alternative, Swetha enjoys Filmi, and Ethan only listens to Taylor Swift, how do we determine who gets the aux for a scenic drive to the Golden Gate Bridge?

Another example: for Ethan's next sunset picnic date, how can he quickly create a playlist that both captures romantic vibes and is personalized to their music tastes?

Making your own playlist beforehand takes hours of time and is inconvenient, and a random playlist from an online stranger is guaranteed to fall short of your expectations. Auxify revolutionizes this entire process with automation.

What it does

Auxify is a digital music platform that allows users to upload their individualized playlists – generated by AI according to their preferences – with friends and users around the world, incorporating social media features such as likes, follows, and comments.

Your next playlist is just a few short queries away: what's the occasion? What's the vibe? How many songs?

How we built it

We utilized OpenAI in conjunction with Spotify's API to churn text into customized playlists displayed on the user's Spotify account. We built our backend and frontend using HTML, CSS, and JS.

Challenges we ran into

Coming in, none of us had prior web development experience, so teaching ourselves development skills and designing an accessible product in the span of a single day was extremely challenging. Furthermore, our short time frame made our experience more stressful while we debugged countless errors. One instance of this was integrating our backend and frontend together.

The brainstorming process was also quite difficult. We came up with a variety of ideas, from a music generator that translated lyrics into other languages and appliance delivery services to voice accent transformers and a date-planning app. The process of narrowing down a specific, emerging technology hack was both tedious and tiring.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we've created a unique working algorithm that successfully integrates OpenAI and Spotify to bring users a tailored listening experience. We're excited to share this technology – and new playlists – with everyone. We've already generated many personalized demos with friends and it's been inspiring to see the results!

What we learned

Our biggest takeaway from this project was the importance of perseverance and cooperative collaboration. Our initial proof of concept and prototype proposals failed multiple times. Even after we had a half-working prototype of our platform, we had to revise our designs and fix for new errors that kept us up all night. Only by working together and building off each others’ ideas were we able to innovatively develop solutions to our problems. Our experience has solidified the importance of these values in the creation process.

What's next for Auxify?

Auxify's vision for the future is grand – beyond AI-generated, individually curated playlists, we seek to integrate music sharing into a broad social platform, connecting users with friends, family, and communities to bridge varied music tastes and share unique listening experiences. We want to make music a powerful social activity – with Auxify, you now have the power to not only see what your friends are listening to, but also communicate, connect, and capture the moment with them.
