Every individual is a consumer of daily cosmetics such as shampoo, body wash, and sunscreen. Even if your products don't consist of eye creams, and foundation, it is important to know what ingredients you are putting on your skin and hair. We want to make sure that everyone is using safe, and effective products in their daily lives that do not put their health at risk. With FullBloom you know that your products are rooted in safety and blossoming with benefits.
What it does
Our app is designed to take ingredients of products the consumers are interested in purchasing, and assess how beneficial, harmful, or neutral the product is to the individual. With many of the cosmetic products containing harmful ingredients that cause cancer, reproductive toxicity, and other health issues nowadays, it is important to know what we are putting in and on our body. With this app, we spotlight the beneficial ingredients, so that you know that your product is not only safe but also effective.
How I built it
Using Swift and Xcode, we developed a mobile app to increase convenience, to make it as easy as possible for users to be well informed. We researched many common and trendy ingredients used in today's cosmetics to form our database. This will be used as a reference to determine whether an ingredient is harmful, beneficial, or neutral to our body. In our code we take a user input, which is the list of ingredients in the product, which we then use as key words to iterate through our database. We also developed a prototype on the UI/UX design software Sketch to demonstrate the full scope of our idea. It also shows how a user will interact with our app when it reaches full functionality.
Challenges I ran into
We ran into many challenges throughout the course of this hackathon. One of the biggest challenges we faced was not having any previous experience with any of the technologies and softwares we were trying to use for the project. While we received a lot of help from mentors, we overshot our capabilities when deciding the direction we wanted to go in. If we had been slightly more realistic with our goals for this project, and hadn't tried to accomplish as many tasks in the time we were given, we would have been in better condition throughout the hackathon.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Accomplishments that my team is really proud of is that despite having to simplify our project significantly, we stayed true to the core of our original idea and did not give up. We also achieved our personal goals of learning how to develop a mobile app and learn different skills and languages. We built this app entirely on Swift and Xcode, a language and IDE that were completely new to all of our team members. Being able to develop a functioning app was a huge accomplishment for all of us and gave us a sense of pride and empowerment. Overall, this was a success for the team because we learned to work in a group setting, collaborate, manage time, and build a product.
What's next for Full Bloom
In our prototype we display the full scope of FullBloom and what we have in store for it in the future. We hope to build it further to a full functioning mobile app that can simplify healthy cosmetics for everybody.
