Inspiration
After watching the Estimote video, we had a revelation. We realized that Estimote devices are very versatile and can be used for purposes other than simply improving retail experiences. Technology like this should be used to empower impaired individuals, aiding them in their day to day life.
What it does
Estimote beacons can be placed in dangerous zones, temporarily blocked areas or even in locations of personalized choice. Via bluetooth, the beacons connect to the phones of visually impaired individuals to notify them when they are approaching dangerous zones. The notification is delivered by Nuance text-to-speech technology.
How we built it
Android Studio, Nuance API, Estimote SDK
Challenges we ran into
Android Studio compilation, Nuance text-to-speech doesn't work when phone is locked
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The app is functional and has growth potential!
What we learned
How Estimotes work, how to use the Nuance API, how to incorporate hardware into an application.
What's next for EstimoteHack
Our application can be more reactive and the use can be extended to a more customizable one, to suit the needs of specific individuals. For example, Estimotes can be placed at intersection crossings to give warnings to a visually impaired person such as that they should not cross because the light is red or to cross when the light is green.
